So Wayne Rooney dominated the weekend press, front and back pages – but betting wise OddsMonkey can still see some real value in the former England and Manchester United captain.

Now at Everton, Rooney – his country’s leading goalscorer of all-time – has shown seem good form which prompted England boss Gareth Southgate to hand him a recall, but the 31-year-old turned it down.

Rooney has since insisted that he will not return to wear the Three Lions jersey again – but Bookmakers, Punters and OddsMonkey are not convinced.

“Despite the fact Wayne Rooney has made it clear he does not want to play for England again, that has produced a hugely interesting market,” OddsMonkey spokesman Peter Watton revealed.

“Indeed, such has been the interest in Rooney – markets have come up about him playing again and we believe this offers real value.

“2/1 you can get on him playing for England again, and from that it is 5/1 for him to be in the England squad at next summer’s World Cup finals.

“If Rooney’s form continues as it has, calls will continue for him to be involved and his odds will shorten – no doubt about it.”
