Cristiano Ronaldo is the new favourite for the Golden Ball after bagging a hat-trick in Portgual’s opening World Cup clash with Spain.
Ronaldo bagged all three goals in the 3-3 clash including a stunning late free-kick which levelled the scores with just minutes left.
The Real Madrid superstar was 16/1 to land the Golden Ball – one of the few achievements he is yet to land in football – but now he is well on his way to grabbing it and is down to 2/1.
“It is easy to see why Ronaldo is now the firm favourite,” said OddsMonkey spokesman Peter Watton.
“He has bagged a hat-trick against one of the best teams in the tournament, and they now have matches against Morocco and Iran to come, he could have it wrapped up before the knockout stages.
“In the last 40-years only once has a player scored more than six to win, and that was his namesake Ronaldo in 2002, so six is normally the mark and he is already half way to it.
“This does, though, means others have been pushed out, and some have yet to play – like Neymar or Harry Kane available at 9/1 and 16/1 respectively, and look good value.”
Selected odds for Golden Boot:
Cristiano Ronaldo 2/1
Diego Costa 6/1
Lionel Messi 12/1
Antoine Griezmann 14/1
Harry Kane 16/1
