The Open – Will Irish eyes be smiling?

July 16th, 2019 Home, Media & Journalism, News & Events, Press Release, Sport

The greatest tournament in golf, The Open, returns to Northern Ireland for only the second time in history at Portrush, and the dream of winning on home soil within the grasp of their favourite son Rory McIlroy.

McIlroy arrives back in Northern Ireland as firm favourite to claim his second claret jug, and he is 7/1 to claim the title.

McIlroy won his only Open to date in 2014, but he admits winning in Portrush would be something special.

The 30-year-old is one of six Irishman teeing it up in County Antrim this week…McIlroy, Darren Clarke and Graeme McDowell from Northern Ireland, and Padraig Harrington, Shane Lowry and amateur James Sugrue from the Republic.

However, history is certainly on the side of the Irishmen – looking back of the last 12-years, they have won four Open’s between them.

OddsMonkey spokesman Peter Watton commented: “This is a huge occasion for Irish golf – and what better way to celebrate than a home success.

“Irish golfers have an outstanding recent history, and of the six in the field – four of them are major winners.

“But all hopes are with McIlroy and he is as short as 7/1, but if he starts well that will be easily halved in no time – so if you think McIlroy is going to win, you probably need to get on him now.”
