Virgil Van Dijk is on course to make history by become only the fourth defender to claim the most prized player award in football – the Ballon d’Or.
The annual award is handed out in December, but Van Dijk is the odds-on favourite to take the honour – having already being named Player of the Year in England last season.
Van Djik has been brilliant for Liverpool since joining in 2018 from Southampton in a world record deal for a defender and he has lived up to his billing at Anfield.
Liverpool came close to claiming their first ever Premier League title last term, edged out by Manchester City – but they came good in Europe as they won the Champions League.
Now Van Dijk’s efforts are set to be recognised by becoming only the fourth defender ever to win the Ballon d’Or.
Ballon d’Or Defender Winners
|1972||Franz Beckenbauer||Bayern Munich|
|1996||Matthias Sammer||Borussia Dortmund|
|2006||Fabio Cannavaro||Real Madrid|
German legend Franz Beckenbauer was the first stopper to win the crown in 1972 and his fellow countryman Matthias Sammer became the second man to do it in 1996.
The only defender this century is former Italian superstar Fabio Cannavaro and van Dijk looks set to join the distinguished list.
OddsMonkey spokesman Peter Watton commented: “Virgil van Dijk has a wonderful season and he has established himself as one of the best not just defenders, but players in world football and the fact he is odds-on to win the Ballon d’Or is little surprise and at 4/6, those odds will likely go shorter.
“Bookmakers think that the only real candidate to push Van Dijk is five-time winner Lionel Messi, who is 6/4 with next best being the other five-time winner Cristiano Ronaldo at 10/1.”
