Bookmakers believe we will see history made when the Ballon d’Or – presented to the world’s best player – is handed out later this year.
For the last decade, the award has been dominated by just two players – Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, both taking the award a record breaking five times.
But now things look set to change and Bookmakers think Fifa’s Player of the Year Luka Modric – will be the man to break the Ronaldo-Messi domination and he is odds-on at 2/5 to claim the trophy.
The other main candidate to displace Ronaldo and Messi is French sensation Kylian Mbappe – who is priced at 10/1 the same as Messi.
Ronaldo is seen as the only real plausible threat to Modric, but at 5/2 he is still only second favourite behind his former Real team-mate.
Modric’s winning of the award later this year, would be historic – but a different name on the award was the done thing before the Ronaldo and Messi era, indeed the ten years preceding them saw ten different winners.
The last man to win the trophy aside from them was Brazilian star Kaka in 2007, before which it was legendary Italy defender Fabio Cannavaro.
2005 saw Ronaldinho take the crown, he had succeeded Andriy Shevchenko – before which came Pavel Nedved, Ronaldo, Michael Owen, Luis Figo, Rivalo and in 1998, Zinedine Zidane.
OddsMonkey spokesman Peter Watton commented: “If Luka Moric takes this award as all Bookmakers and public clearly think, it could represent a real changing of the guard in terms of Ronaldo and Messi.
“These two made it look easy, where in actual fact the chances of winning were hugely difficult, and we now look like we could be going to the previous years when it was a different winner on a yearly basis.
“But looking back at this year, Modric at 2/5 means he can basically start making room on his mantelpiece.”
