Seve Ballesteros is the last man to captain his Europe on home soil, but it could happen again in Ireland in 2026.
The captain for 2026 will not be announced until a few years before, indeed Europe are yet to confirm their 2020 skipper – which will take place in Italy, although it is not thought any Italians are in the running with likes of Lee Westwood and Luke Donald favourites to be captain in Rome.
Ryder Cup Futures venues
- 2020: Whistling Straits (Straits Course), Kohler, Wisconsin
- 2022: Marco Simone Golf & Country Club, Rome, Italy
- 2024: Bethpage Black, Farmingdale, New York
- 2026: Adare Manor, County Limerick, Republic of Ireland
- 2028: Hazeltine National Golf Club, Chaska, Minnesota
Ballesteros remains the only non-British captain to have had the honour of being in his homeland, but there is hope that will change.

As it stands four Irishman are considered strong contenders to be on hand to captain the European side on home soil – two of whom are former captains.
Paul McGinley had the honours in Gleneagles in 2014, whilst Padraig Harrington will be captain at Whistling Straits in America next year – but both could return – whilst Northern Irish pair Graeme McDowell and Darren Clarke are also strong contenders.
OddsMonkey spokesman Peter Watton “The Irish are on a real high in golf now – they have just won the Open in Ireland with Shane Lowry, they have Padraig Harrington captaining the next Ryder Cup match and now they have been awarded the honours in 2026, and who back against one of their own being captain.

Graeme McDowell 4/1
Lee Westwood 5/1
Justin Rose 15/2
