Last updated Dec 2019
Founded in 1711 by Queen Anne, Royal Ascot is a prestigious meet in the racing calendar. It’s so prestigious, that every year, Queen Elizabeth II attends with other members of the Royal Family, arriving in a horse-drawn carriage. The beginning of every race day is marked by the Royal procession at 2pm and the raising of the Queen’s Royal Standard. The procession dates back to 1825, when King George IV led four other coaches with members of the Royal party up the Straight Mile.
This guide will bring you information on this year’s runners, previous winners and some interesting Royal Ascot facts. You’ll also find out a little more about betting on horse racing, including some tips on how to pick a horse to bet on. When to place your bets on Royal Ascot 2019
Choosing when to place a bet differs from person to person. Some like to bet as soon as the list of runners is announced, whereas others wait until the last moment before the off. In other words: when to place your bet(s) on Royal Ascot 2019 is completely up to you.
So what happens in the run up to an event such as Royal Ascot?
Declarations for Royal Ascot are announced 48 hours before the meeting starts, which is normal for flat races. That’s when you can see the final list of horses who will be running in the individual races. However, the betting market is already open, meaning that you can bet in advance of the event.
With ante-post betting, you’ll most likely find that the odds are good but there’s always the chance that the horse you choose may drop out of the race. Ante-post betting is where you bet at least one day in advance of the race taking place.
If you bet on the day of the race instead, the chances are that horses are more settled because the final declarations have been made. However, drop outs happen, so it’s always a good idea to check the T&Cs of an offer. Does the bookmaker offer a refund in the event of a non-runner?

How do I choose which horses to bet on?
So now you know when you can place your Royal Ascot bets, we’d better look at how to choose which horse to put your money on…
· Do it blind: Not every betting decision has to be made using science, analysis and odds. Instead, you can pick a horse because you like its name, for example. Obviously if you choose a horse in this way, your bet is more of a lottery because you’re ignoring how it has previously performed or its performance potential in this race. This information is expressed through the odds that are given to horses by bookmakers.
· What are the odds?: No, really! Odds are used to indicate a horse’s perceived chance of winning a race. Lower odds mean it’s believed to have a good chance of winning, whilst higher odds mean it’s considered to be an ‘outsider’ and therefore less likely to win. However, higher odds and the lower probability of a horse’s success mean that if it does win, the amount you win from your bet will be higher. To give yourself a better chance of winning, though, it makes sense to choose one of the favourites.
· Listen to the experts: Tipsters share their predictions for races of all shapes and sizes; some for free and others for a fee. These predictions are based on things like the tipster’s analysis of a horse’s recent performance and the going – course conditions – in the lead up to race day (the going).
· Do your own research: If you’d rather do your own research than listen to a tipster, there’s so much information out there for you. You can use the Racing Post to find out about a horse – just search by name to view their profile.Check out the latest going report for Ascot Racecourse here. Race cards are an essential addition if you want to find out more about all of the runners and riders on the day.
