Amazon Sellers can use the FBA service to fulfil customer orders on their behalf.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is similar to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oddsmonkey.com\/sidehustle\/a-guide-to-dropshipping\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dropshipping<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but not quite the same thing. Instead of the Seller holding stock and then sending it out to the customer themselves, they can ship everything to an Amazon centre. With FBA, Amazon then takes care of everything for them.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fulfilment of orders includes storing items and then picking, packing, and shipping them out. It is the Seller\u2019s responsibility to keep inventory updated and stock ordered as needed.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The FBA programme launched in 2006 with the aim of helping third party sellers operate on a larger scale. We\u2019re not going to go into lots of detail here but let\u2019s look at some of the most relevant terms.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h3><b>Amazon Seller\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An Amazon Seller is someone who is registered to Amazon and sells products via their Marketplace.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amazon.co.uk offers two levels of Seller account: Individual and Professional. We talk about both of these accounts in more detail throughout this guide. As a third party seller, you\u2019ll need to choose one of these accounts in order to sell through the Amazon platform.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This guide uses both \u2018Seller\u2019 and \u2018seller\u2019 to try and differentiate between those who sell through Amazon (capital S) and sellers (merchants) in general.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The following terms are the different types of fulfilment that can be used once an order has been placed.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h3><b>FBA: Fulfilment by Amazon<\/b><\/h3>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When a customer buys something from you on Amazon, Amazon will pick, pack, and ship the item to them. Order fulfilment is taken care of with FBA.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h3><b>FBM: Fulfilment by merchant<\/b><\/h3>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You are the merchant. FBM is where you fulfil a customer\u2019s order yourself. When a customer buys something from you on Amazon, you process, pack, and ship the order.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h2><b>How Does FBA work?<\/b><\/h2>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So how does FBA work? There are four main steps to Fulfilment by Amazon:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ol>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Register as an Amazon Seller. If you\u2019re already a Seller, switch your account to FBA.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prepare your inventory and send it to a fulfilment centre for Amazon to store.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take advantage of Amazon\u2019s marketplace platform and make some sales!<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amazon fulfils any orders and ships the product(s) out to the customer. Their customer service team handles questions, returns, and refunds.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Payment is collected from the customer and paid to you every two weeks.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<h2><b>How To Get Started With Amazon FBA<\/b><\/h2>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So how do you actually get started as a Seller with Amazon FBA? We\u2019ll take you through the main steps you need to complete in order to start making money online through Amazon\u2019s FBA scheme.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NB: this guide assumes you are already ready to go with products to sell through Amazon.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li aria-level=\"1\">\r\n<h3><b>Register as an Amazon Seller<\/b><\/h3>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve only ever used Amazon as a buyer before, it\u2019s time to register for a Seller account.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two types: <\/span><b>Individual<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Professional<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An <\/span><b>Individual<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> account is free but you pay commission on every sale you make. It\u2019s perfect for individual sellers who make less than 35 sales a month.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><b>Professional<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> account costs \u00a325 a month in the UK, and includes advanced tools. We talk about these fees more later on in the guide.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><br \/><\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li aria-level=\"1\">\r\n<h3><b>Prepare inventory<\/b><\/h3>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preparation of your inventory is one of the most important parts of Amazon FBA. First, you need to decide who will package the items: you or Amazon.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you choose to do this yourself, you must follow Amazon\u2019s prepping guidelines. Prepping requirements are outlined in great detail. For example, below are the rules around using bubble wrap to package items.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Products that require bubble wrap must:<\/span><\/i><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be tightly wrapped and taped shut so the product cannot fall out<\/span><\/i><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have a scannable barcode label on the outside<\/span><\/i><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pass a 125 cm drop test on a hard surface without the contents breaking. Your inventory won\u2019t be accepted to an Amazon fulfilment centre if it\u2019s not properly packaged. Or you will be charged per item that needs preparing properly.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alternatively, use Amazon\u2019s prep service, which charges on a per unit basis. Some of the fees are shown in the table below, but check with Amazon directly for complete up to date information:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li aria-level=\"1\">\r\n<h3><b>Sell<\/b><\/h3>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now it\u2019s time to make some money! It\u2019s up to you to attract potential customers and convert site visits into sales.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Selling through Amazon, you\u2019ll come up against a lot of competition so you have to stand out from the crowd. This may be through your pricing, brand awareness, or items on offer.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use the Inventory Performance Dashboard to keep track of what is selling well, what isn\u2019t, and make sure stock levels are maintained on popular items.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li aria-level=\"1\">\r\n<h3><b>Amazon fulfils\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once an order has been placed, Amazon workers pick, pack, and send it out to the customer from your inventory stock.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h2><b>Pros And Cons Of FBA<\/b><\/h2>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As with most things, there are a number of pros and cons to choosing fulfilment by Amazon.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h3><b>Pros<\/b><\/h3>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Large customer base<\/b><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FBA allows you to access Amazon\u2019s existing customer base and sell on a potentially worldwide stage. Buyers come to Amazon because they know they\u2019re likely to find what they\u2019re looking for. And, sometimes, a load of stuff they\u2019re not looking for.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But ultimately, they know they\u2019ll have options on Amazon from businesses competing for their attention.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Inventory Performance Index<\/b><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Introduced in August 2020, the Inventory Performance Index tells you how well your inventory is performing. The Index measures current performance and then suggests ways to improve. Get rid of excess inventory, keep stock levels updated, and improve sell-through rate to take your business to the next level.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Scalability<\/b><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FBA can be a great platform to start an online business from. You can start small, selling a few products and testing the waters, giving yourself time to build up knowledge and confidence before scaling up.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It helps that you don\u2019t have to worry about finding a larger brick and mortar premises or warehouse in order to make your online business bigger.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Returns and replacement policies<\/b><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research has found that the average return rate on Amazon can range between 5% to 15%. Thankfully, with FBA, you can use Amazon\u2019s returns and replacement policies, and Amazon will process them for you.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Amazon TCB<\/b><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, it\u2019s another acronym, but with FBA, Amazon takes care of business for you, at least in terms of fulfilment and customer service.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Larger profit margins<\/b><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using FBA can help increase your profit margins in a number of ways.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, it removes the need to hire staff to fulfil orders, reduces the storage space you need to cover, and saves you time in packing and shipping your products.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Cost effective<\/b><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shipping costs are included in FBA fees. This means that you don\u2019t pay extra to send via Amazon Prime for unlimited, fast One-Day Delivery on millions of orders.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h3><b>Cons<\/b><\/h3>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Sales aren\u2019t guaranteed<\/b><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may have the potential to reach a lot of eyes through Amazon, but sales, profits, and success are guaranteed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Selling through Amazon gives you a good foundation to start from but it\u2019s up to you to try and make consistent profits. There is a possibility that you\u2019ll invest significant amounts in stock but have great difficulty in selling it.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>High competition<\/b><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Due to the sheer amount of active Sellers on Amazon, competition for sales is high. You\u2019re competing with online shops of all shapes and sizes. You need to stand out from the crowd\u2026within the confines of the Amazon marketplace.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Contact with customers<\/b><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amazon has set guidelines around how you\u2019re allowed to communicate with your customers. There are specific rules around the kind of direct, indirect, or buyer-seller messages that are or aren\u2019t acceptable. As an Amazon Seller, it is up to you to follow these guidelines.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Reliant on Amazon<\/b><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You don\u2019t have complete control over the platform you\u2019re selling from. Amazon FBA constantly changes to meet the needs of its sellers. While this can be helpful in some ways, it can also be difficult to keep up with the constant updates to processes, guidelines, and other aspects of the programme.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Stickerless inventory<\/b><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is on the \u2018Cons\u2019 list because this recent addition to FBA could have a negative impact on your business. In 2020, Amazon introduced the co-mingling of inventory. Amazon can now store every unit of a single product together, regardless of the seller, and then ship any one of these units to a customer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Putting potential advantages of this new system to one side, the biggest risk to the seller is contamination of stock. Because products are picked from any available stock, your customer could receive a counterfeit product, rather than the authentic item you shipped to Amazon. Some sellers have received negative feedback and been banned from selling on Amazon, because customers have been sent counterfeit or damaged items.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h2><b>Amazon FBA fees: How Much Does FBA Cost In The UK?\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\r\n<h3><b>Account fees<\/b><\/h3>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two types of Amazon Seller account: Individual and Professional. The Individual account is free to open and is suitable for sellers who:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Want to keep up-front costs low<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Want to sell fewer than 35 items a month<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are still deciding what to sell and want to test different items<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although this type of account is free, you\u2019ll need to pay a charge of \u00a30.75 (plus VAT) to Amazon on every product you sell.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Professional seller account costs \u00a325 + VAT a month but you don\u2019t have to pay each time you sell an item. This account is suitable for sellers who:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are established ecommerce sellers with a pre-existing online shop<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plan to sell more than 35 items a month<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Want access to advanced selling tools or add-on programs like Amazon Business, Launchpad, or Handmade<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3><b>Inventory storage fees<\/b><\/h3>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you send inventory to an Amazon fulfilment centre, they hold it for you until it is sold. The fees you pay are based on the volume of packaged inventory. Fees are charged on a monthly basis.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monthly<\/span><\/h4>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the time of writing, UK Amazon FBA Sellers storing clothing and accessories pay \u00a30.56 per cubic foot from January to September and \u00a30.75 October to December. This is because of the run-up to Christmas being a much busier period for sales and Amazon workers. Other items have different fees &#8211; check Amazon\u2019s information for full details.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember that monthly storage fees are charged on the daily average volume that your inventory takes up within the fulfilment centre. Volume is measured in cubic feet, and is based on the size of each unit when properly packaged and ready to ship.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other storage fees<\/span><\/h4>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to the monthly fees, you may be subject to a \u2018storage utilisation surcharge\u2019, which requires you to pay an additional fee if you meet all the following criteria:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You must have a Professional selling account<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your first shipment to an Amazon fulfilment centre was more than 365 days ago<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your average daily inventory volume for the product size tier is at or above 0.71 cubic metres<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your storage utilisation ratio for the product size tier is above 22 weeks<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other occasional fees include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Removal order fees (you can ask Amazon to return or dispose of any inventory in a fulfilment centre for a per-item fee)<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Returns processing fees\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unplanned services fees<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aged inventory fees &#8211; if your inventory has been waiting in Amazon\u2019s fulfilment centre for over 271 days, Amazon will start charging extra to keep hold of it<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3><b>Fulfilment fees<\/b><\/h3>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amazon fulfilment fees include picking and packing orders, shipping and handling, customer service, and product returns. Remember: most costs are determined according to the weight and dimensions of a packaged item. Fulfilment fees are paid per item sold and shipped from an Amazon fulfilment centre.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">See Amazon\u2019s Rate Card for more information on their UK fulfilment fees.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h3><b>Indirect Or Marketing Costs<\/b><\/h3>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another cost you\u2019ll have to factor into running an online shop is marketing and advertising fees. Advertise products on social channels, either organically or through paid features. Each social platform has its own paid advertising options, so make sure you check out what works best for you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amazon offers its own advertising options to Sellers which include sponsored products and brands.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h3><b>Return Costs\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a customer is unhappy with their purchase, they can choose to return it to Amazon, and you will need to pay Amazon a return processing fee. For UK Amazon Sellers, the returns processing fee is equal to 50% of the total fulfilment fee for a given product.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h3><b>Is there a way to reduce FBA costs?<\/b><\/h3>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a few ways to reduce FBA costs, but ultimately it\u2019s worth remembering that it\u2019s already quite a cost-effective service.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps one of the easiest ways to reduce costs is to avoid paying long term storage fees on inventory. Make sure that your items are selling well and not sitting in storage for too long. That way, you only have to pay monthly storage fees without any extra long term charges.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Storage fees are charged on the size and weight of items, not their value.
