Sport to see the return of fans

Fans have been banned from attending sport since March and although most sport has now recommenced it hasn’t really felt the same without the fans in attendance. The heart and soul of sport is undoubtedly created by fans.

That is now about to change though after a recent easing of the lock down. The Prime Minister has said trials will begin to see if larger gatherings can return.

Goodwood which is one of the biggest events of the year for horse racing fans will be one of the pilot events. Of course, the reopening will be done with COVID safety in mind but it is a major step towards normality for sports fans. If the pilot events are successful and venues can prove they can reopen safely then more events will be able to start receiving fans again in the Autumn.

The Prime Minister said: “We will pilot larger gatherings in venues such as sports stadia with a view to a wider reopening in the autumn. All of these measures, for August 1, should be done in a Covid-secure way.”

Pilot events are:

• The World Snooker Championship in Sheffield which starts on July 31st
• The Glorious Goodwood horse racing festival which starts August 1st
• Two men’s county cricket friendly matches, taking place on July 26th and 27th.

Providing the trials are successful a date of October 1st has been set for other venues to start opening their doors.

Many sports clubs rely on the revenue from spectators to exist so the return of fans cannot come soon enough for these businesses.

Wigan Athletic recently entered Administration and it is thought that 10 to 15 other clubs could follow if things don’t change.

Hopefully, we will see fans in stadiums very soon.
