Emery new favourite in Premier League sack race

Arsenal manager Unai Emery has been promoted to the front of the Premier League Sack Race for the first time as pressure grows on the Spaniard.

Emery took over from Arsene Wenger in the summer of 2018 and impressed early on, but he missed out on the Champions League places and also lost in the final of the Europa League to rivals Chelsea.

Now discontent is emerging. The club broke their transfer record in the summer on Lille’s Nicolas Pepe, whilst also splashing out on Kieran Tierney and David Luiz.

However, an in-different start to the season including the very public stripping of the captaincy of Granit Xhaka – has led to Arsenal fans calling for Emery’s head.

And after the defeat at Leicester City, which saw them comfortably win 2-0 – Arsenal have now dropped eight points behind Manchester City in fourth.

Bookmakers have now reacted by making him favourite to be next Premier League manager out of the door, for the first time since he arrived in England.

Emery is now the 10th manager since the market opened in July, to be listed as favourite.

Emery is now 2/1 favourite, just ahead of Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl.

OddsMonkey spokesman Peter Watton commented: “Always a fascinating market and it probably isn’t a huge shock to see Emery backed in, such has been the criticism in recent weeks – but the pressure is really on Ralph Hasenhuttl as well as the likes of Manuel Pellegrini and Marco Silva – so we could see a number of names emerge at the top of this market in the coming days as the international break begins.”
