South Korean film Parasite caused, arguably, the biggest upset in Oscar’s history as it took the best film award.
The mystery-drama, which also won best foreign film, was the first movie not in English ever to take the big win.
But the win was all the more remarkable as OddsMonkey can reveal that this is the first time in history that a movie has won the Oscar after another film – 1917, won every other major award.
Sam Mendes’s World War I drama was odds-on having won the Golden Globes, the Directors (DGA) and Producers Guilds (PGA) of America and the BAFTAs. No film which has won every other major gong, has then failed to take the Academy award.
However, Parasite took the honours and keep the Bookmakers happy!
OddsMonkey spokesman Peter Watton commented: “One thing is for sure, Bookmakers were delighted with the outcome of the Oscars in Los Angeles.
“At odds-on to win a 1917 victory would have hit the Bookmakers massively, but Parasite – who was as big as 4/1 just before the ceremony – made sure that a huge profits was enjoyed by the Bookies.
“Amazingly, that is now six-years in a row that the favourites have been beaten for the big award in the Oscars – not since 12-years A Slave back in 2014 have we seen a favourite win – which is just remarkable.”
