5 ways to earn an extra income if you’re a student
There are quite a few ways to make money online and filling in surveys is one of the easiest. Pretty much anyone can do this in their spare time to make an extra few quid every month.
While it’s not as lucrative as matched betting there is still some good money to be made as long as you are signed up to the right survey sites.
So with that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the best and highest paying survey sites.
Each of these sites offer multiple surveys a day but in order to make any decent money you will need to be signed up to as many of them as possible. That way, you can focus your time on the highest paying surveys that are available.
Swagbucks are one of the most popular reward and survey sites online due to the multiple ways you can earn money. As well as surveys, you can earn money by watching videos, playing games, searching the web and more. The points you earn are aptly called Swagbucks (SB) and can be converted into cash or vouchers and they do accumulate quite quickly.
One of the easiest ways to start earning Swagbucks is by switching to their search engine. 20-30 searches a day will see you earn around £600 a year simply for using their search engine as opposed to Google.
You can get cash back on your purchases simply by clicking through to stores from the Swagbucks website. Big retailers like Argos, M&S and The Body Shop are just a few of the participating retailers.
You can earn around 150SB a day by watching suggested videos on the Swagbucks site. Obviously you can cheat a little by setting the video away and then getting on with something else.
There are a few surveys every day to get stuck into. These are an easy way to top up your Swagbucks balance. Expect to earn around 70SB (40p) for every survey you complete.
Toluna are one of the most trusted online survey sites around and they pay well too. They want to know your opinion on products and services and will reward you with points that you can convert to vouchers.
Each survey you complete will earn you between 3000 and 6000 points, and once you hit 80,000 points you can trade them in for a £15 Amazon voucher.
Toluna also reward their best members by sending them free products to test. Once you have received the item and tested it out for a while you will be asked to fill in a survey about the item, and then the product is yours to keep. This doesn’t happen all the time but it’s nice when it does.
Each survey takes on average 15 minutes to complete, so expect to get a £15 voucher for every 4 hours you invest. Not an amazing hourly rate but it’s pretty easy money.
Vivatic are another great survey site. One of the best things about this site is that you get rewarded in cash instead of points. So you can see straight away what you are going to earn for each survey.
Usually you will get £1-£2 per survey, and the surveys take around 15 minutes to complete. You will need to earn £25 before you can withdraw the cash.
There are other ways to earn on Vivatic too. There are various online jobs you could do for them. Jobs include:
– Writing articles
– Answering questions
– Writing blog posts
– Writing reviews
– Research product information
– Data entry
– Transcribing videos
These are one of the better paying sites and as such they are very popular. While it is free to sign up, registration is often closed to new members so you will need to follow them on Facebook and wait for them to announce they are looking for new people. Once they are, get registered ASAP as the spots fill up fast!
Once you get in, you can expect to earn around £10 an hour for the surveys they send out. Each survey will earn you between £1 and £5 but you only need to earn as little as £10 before you can withdraw your cash.
Surveys are sent to you via email and are targeted based on your profile, so fill out your profile honestly and you will likely get surveys that are of genuine interest to you, making the process a lot more enjoyable. Surveys usually have a limit of the number of responses, so you will need to act fast once they send you a new survey.
OnePoll have loads of quick surveys you can do. Each one only takes a few minutes and will earn you 20p a time, but you’ll need to earn £30 before you can withdraw the cash. OnePoll lets you withdraw via BACS to so you can avoid PayPal fees with this one.
On average surveys take 3 minutes to complete so expect it to take around 10 hours to earn £40.
YouGov don’t send out many surveys but they are still worth being a member of. Surveys usually focus on politics and current affairs.
Each survey will earn you between 50p and £3. Due to the infrequent survey opportunities it will take a while to reach the £50 payout threshold but you can earn a little more by referring your friends to YouGov.
This is another popular site that sends out surveys based on your personal interests. You can get rewarded in vouchers or cash from MySurvey. Each survey earns you around 100 points (345 points = £3).
The surveys don’t take long to complete and you can expect to earn around £5 an hour from the surveys they send you.
Another high paying survey site that you will want to sign up to. You can’t earn cash here but you do get high street or Amazon vouchers.
Each survey will earn you around £1 and you need to earn £10 to cash out. Surveys are sent via email, but you need to be quick once one comes through… otherwise you’ll find that they’re closed to new participants.
You should get enough surveys to earn at least £10 per month from i-Say.
These guys are one of my personal favourites because they have such a low payout threshold so you can get some money coming in really quickly. Once you see the rewards actually hit your account it’s really motivating to get stuck into some more surveys.
Each survey will earn you around 50p and you only need to get to £2.50 before you can transfer the cash to PayPal. There are usually quite a few surveys each day here so you can sometimes hit the payout threshold every day. Each survey takes around 10 minutes to complete.
Opinion Outpost are really popular though, so surveys get taken down pretty quick as they reach their quota. Another frustrating aspect of this site is that surveys will often become unavailable mid way through filling them in because either the quota was reached or the answers you gave weren’t what they were looking for. Despite this, it’s still a great survey site and the surveys are quite varied and enjoyable to fill in.
Those are some of the most popular and high paying sites out there but there are others you can sign up to such as:
It’s a great idea to sign up to as many of these as you can as then you can pick and choose the best paying surveys and rewards. You won’t be able to complete all of them, but this way you get the best of what’s on offer.
You aren’t going to get rich from these sites but there is plenty of easy money to be made here that you could be earning in your spare time. Due to the fact that there is so much on offer you really need to focus your time on the best offers and make sure you get paid as much as possible for the time you invest.
1. Set up a dedicated email address
Once you start signing up to these sites you are going to get a lot of emails coming through. You don’t want this clogging up your regular emails so it’s a good idea to set up a free email account just for your online survey sites. This will also keep everything in one place so when you are in the mood for some online surveys you can open your emails and see what is available. Some of these sites don’t send surveys via emails so you will need to sign into each one to see what is available. You will soon become aware of which sites are worth checking on first. I usually go straight to Swagbucks because of the huge number of opportunities that are on offer there.
2. Sign up to all the sites
Don’t limit yourself to a few sites. Signing up to all them of them will give you more options and more opportunities at high paying surveys. Keep an eye on your emails for the high paying surveys and try to get on them as soon as possible to maximise your chance of getting to take part.
3. Answer honestly and take your time
It can be tempting to rush through the surveys and give any old answer to the questions. Most of these survey sites are savvy to that and have software clever enough to detect this activity and your account can be terminated.
Once you have filled in a few surveys you will start to recognise the ones that require extra attention and the ones that let you skip through them a bit quicker.
You will also get penalised for inconsistent responses and the surveys will throw in a question every now and then to make sure you are paying attention. Questions like which animal says “woof”. If you click cat it’s going to know you aren’t reading the questions and end the survey there and then.
4. Watch videos
You will want to look for opportunities to earn some easy money though. Sites that let you watch videos are great. If you are watching a video make sure you keep that tab active or again they will know you aren’t watching and you won’t get paid. However that doesn’t mean you can’t go and make a cup of tea or something! Just be aware that some sites will ask you questions once the video is over and inaccurate responses are again going to lead to a lost commission.
5. Cash In Straight Away
As soon as you have enough money or points in your accounts convert it to vouchers or cash straight away. Although unlikely some of these sites may disappear overnight and take your hard earned cash with them so get it into your pocket as soon as you can.
Also if you get penalised for not filling in surveys properly the site might withhold your money for this too. This happened to me once even though I was filling them in properly so get your cash out ASAP.
6. Never pay to sign up
If a survey site wants you to pay to sign up then you should probably avoid it. Chances are, it’s a scam. All the sites mentioned on this article are free to sign up to. Watch out for scam sites and ones offering massive rewards. If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
7. Refer your friends
Many of the sites I have mentioned here have referral programs that allow you to earn even more money simply by getting a friend to sign up. Swagbucks is brilliant for this as not only do they reward you for the sign up, but you will get rewarded with 10% of your friends points for life. So if they earn 500SB you get 50SB. This doesn’t take away points from your friend it just means you get a bonus for their earnings too. Getting a few friends signed up to Swagbucks could lead to easy passive earnings for you.
8. Keep a log
When you are signed up to so many sites it can be hard to remember what you have where. Keeping a written log of your activity will not only help remind you what money you have in what account but also help avoid missed payouts. Occasionally, you complete a task or survey and not get paid out. As some sites don’t pay out straight away you need to remember to go back and make sure you got the reward. If you didn’t, complain to them. Complaining on their Facebook or Twitter pages is often the best way to get them to sort it out as the complaint is public and they don’t want the bad publicity. Forgetting to chase up rewards can see you spending time for no reward.
Survey sites aren’t going to see you rolling in cash, but there is an opportunity to make some easy money. If you have the spare time and like answering questions then it’s a pretty good little hobby that will earn you some pocket money.
If you really want to maximise your earnings online then take a look at matched betting. There is no better way to earn money online. The rate of pay is way higher than online surveys and it’s so much more fun to do.
